Yorga Djenna Bidi – Noongar for Women Moving Forward Together
Early in July 2016, Leadership WA approached Solo Films to produce video content for their Yorga Djenna Bidi program. It encourages Aboriginal women to network and develop lasting partnerships to benefit their personal, professional and their community lives.
Perth-based not-for-profit, Leadership WA, officially launched the ground-breaking Aboriginal Women’s Leadership Program mid July 2016, following the successful pilot program in 2015. The pilot program, with the support of Her Excellency Governor Kerry Sanderson AO and the guidance of ambassadors Robyn Smith Walley and 2016 Western Australian of the Year Aboriginal Award winner Rishelle Hume, brought 20 different women together, from different backgrounds, and gave them the tools to understand themselves better. Their confidence grew, knowledge increased and their communication skills became more effective in a very short time, so we know this leadership program works.
The women ranged in age from 20 to 54 years. They represented 12 different Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups. The women worked together over five months to learn about themselves as leaders. They gained confidence and skills, and identified areas in which they will work together to improve our state. Subsequent to the program, they have continued to join together in a Community of Practice to support each other and identify areas in which they can cooperate to make a difference.
This unique program is the only of its kind. It brings Aboriginal women together across different cultural backgrounds, ages, occupations, leadership experiences, and education. This diversity allows participants to learn from each other as well as from key speakers and facilitators. Young participants are encouraged to explore cultural identity issues with older participants. They in turn, learned more about issues faced by younger women.
Our role was to get an intimate insight form the perspective of the graduates and from the program’s passionate ambassadors.
